What is Active Release Technique?

ART is an advanced hands-on treatment that works to treat soft tissues (muscles, tendons, fascia and nerves). When we injure ourselves either from an acute injury or overuse, our bodies produce scar tissue and adhesions. An accumulation of scar tissues can inhibit the natural movement of muscles and other soft tissues that result in pain, discomfort and weakness. Furthermore, scar tissues and adhesions can irritate tendons and nerves. When nerves are irritated it may cause sensations such as pins and needles or numbness. ART works to break up this scar tissue thus involved soft tissues can return to their natural pain-free movement and function. ART can reduce recovery time and increase performance.

How is it performed?

The first step is to assess the injured or painful area and locate the scar tissues that are restricting movement and/or causing pain. The treatment involves applying tension to the scar tissue while lengthening muscles, tendons and ligaments. ART returns tissues to their correct tension, texture, movement and function thus eliminating symptoms.

Who can it help?

Individuals with a soft tissue injury will benefit from ART. Some athletes seek ART treatment to accelerate healing as well as enhance performance. ART can also be beneficial to workers who have an injury due to repetitive movements or staying in the same position for prolonged periods of time.

Specific injuries that ART is particularly effective for:

  • Back pain
  • Neck pain
  • Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
  • Shoulder injuries (tendonitis, impingement)
  • Sport injuries
  • Strains
